Daily Reminders:
Monday- Wear sneakers for P.E.
We will go to the library.
You will have a story to read and vocabulary to practice.
You will get new spelling words and a memory verse.
Tuesday- You will have another story to read.
Thursday- Is it your day for show and tell?
Friday- Wear sneakers for P.E.
You will have a spelling test.
Say your Bible memory if you haven’t yet.
Reading CAFE Menu
We use this “menu” to organize the reading strategies we know.
If your child is struggling to read a word, you might suggest one of the accuracy strategies.
If your child doesn’t seem to understand the text, you might use a comprehension strategy.
Comprehension- I understand what I read.
Check for understanding.
Monitor and fix up.
Retell the story- beginning, middle, and end.
Use prior knowledge.
Make and adjust predictions.
Ask questions as you read.
Infer.
Summarize and sequence.
Name literary elements-
genre, plot, character, setting, problem, solution.
Compare and contrast.
Make connections.
Reread if it doesn’t make sense.
Notice details.
Visualize- make a movie in your mind.
Use text features- titles, headings, and captions.
Use main idea and details.
Name the author’s purpose.
Find cause and effect relationships.
Notice the author’s point of view.
Accuracy- I can read the words.
Say one word for each word you see.
Know letters and sounds.
Don’t skip, add, or misread.
Look at the whole word.
Use the pictures. Do the words and pictures match?
Cross check- Does it look right, sound right, and make sense?
Use the pattern.
Chunk letters and sounds together.
Know vocabulary words by heart.
Skip the word and come back.
Take off the ending.
Use word families.
Blend sounds, stretch, and read.
Use pictures- do the words and pictures match?
Find little words in big words.
Flip the sounds.
Fluency- I can read accurately, with expression, and understand what I read.
Use punctuation marks.
Read good fit books.
Know vocabulary words by heart.
Adjust reading rate to match the text.
Read in phrases, not word by word.
Read with expression.
Voracious reading.
Reread the text.
I know, find, and use interesting words.
Tune into interesting words. Use them in speaking and writing.
